A constant complaint we’ve leveled at every mirrorless system is the lack of any similar sort of AF assist. We fully understand that image sensors have limited IR visibility, but flash AF assist lamps have a strong red component, and regardless one could design a new set of flashes that project a grid with color matched to the color filters over on-sensor PDAF pixels.
Unfortunately, at launch, Nikon has done no better. There’s a very bright green light on the camera body that activates (if you want it to) in very dim light, but we’d suggest you just shut it off, unless you want to be kicked out of a venue for disturbing guests.
We hope a future mirrorless-focused flash system from Nikon addresses this issue.
