    Re: D2X

    Hallo,

                -------------------
Hand on D2X and first (not scientific) personell impression

This week Nikon started in Germany a roadshow of the D2X for their NPS
members. The roadshow takes place in several large German Cities in
meeting rooms of hotels. The cameras where tied with a cord to the
tables and the CF card slots were glued. But you could shoot inside the room
what you want and with which settings you wanted. Only you could not get any files.

They had approx 8 D2X there with serial numbers of 5001000 and above.
The Firmware was V 1.0, and a Nikon rep stated that this will be the
firmware with which the camera will be released.

In addition they had set up two small studio where you can shoot models.
Each of those D2X have been tethered via Capture 4.2 to a laptop and a
large monitor (Eizo 20"). They let you mug around at the Laptop whatever you
want. Zooming in was a the best way (not scientific way) to get a first
impression how the noise and the colors are.

Luckily I was early there and the models spent a lot of time with
applying their make up on. So I could take the camera and shoot in the meeting room.
It was painted in light yellow and illuminated by gas discharging bulbs
or energy saving bulbs (not tungsten). So not really the best conditions
for photos. I tried especially 400, 800 and 1600 ASA (Hi-1) with automatic
and with underexposure of 1 step. My personal first impression (and this is
based on a comparision with that what I would get if i shoot the same
with a D2H) and what you can get out of 10 minutes playing and watching the pictures on a computer screen is:

                - Noise at 400 or 800 is significantly lower as with the D2H (even if you
go in Capture to 200 or 400 % it was not disturbing)
                - Underexposure by 1 Stop (1 Stop) dosen´t effect the noise much (didnt
                increase much)
                - D2X has with Hi-1 less noise than a D2H with 800
                - The Auto White balance is much better than at the D2H. The Skine tones
look even under the poor lighting good
                - Mixed light (fill in flash and room light, ) gives better colour balance
than with the D2H (the background is less yellow, the skin colours are
                better)
                - Batterie life not significantly lower (one charge gives approx 700 -
900 pictures, a Nikon Rep stated this - and that is almost what I get out of
                the D2H)
                - The picture on the camera screen comes regarding brightness more close to what you get on the sceen of your computer

As I said, not scientific and only a first impression, but for me the
camera is better than that what I expected. Lets see how the camera works when we have it. Another good news (for me) is that they have already the first cameras in Germany at the Nikon Head Office - I got a call from them and
they asked "You wanted one, at which dealer have you ordered the camera,
that we can ship your camera to this dealer?" So i look forward to get
one end of this month or early in March (you never know how fast the postal
                service is)
