een citaat uit een boek van B Moose Peterson
resolution in the digital world is expressed in different ways depending on what part of the digital loop you are working in.for example,in case of digital cameras, resolution indicates how many individual pixels are contained on the image sensor.this is usualexpressed in megapixels.each pixel captures a portion of the total light falling on the sensor.and it is from these pixels that the image is created.so,a 3 megapixel camera has 3 million pixels covering the sensor.the size of the sensor also determines the size of the pixels used to cover it;the larger the sensor size, the sharper the image, and pixels are not uniform in size from camera to camera.in other words,a 4 million point and shoot camera will have a smaller sensor than a 4 million slr camera.therefore, the 4 million pixels have to be smaller in size to fit on the smaller sensor.that same number of pixels made to fit on a larger sensor are able to be larger in size and hold more detailed information per pixel, resolting in greater image-capture data.
remember, more megapixels will not guarantee you better resolution or better images!!just like there is good film and bad film, there are good pixels and bad pixels,so a small number of great pixels can produce a better image than tons of bad pixels.
