If you have a backup camera, I would say no.
its not like it will explode at 400.001, but still, this was my first pro camera (and my first 2 years in business) so I dont even know what happens when a shutter fails.
It could fail to latch when re-cocked, giving an "Err" indication in the top LCD, or a shutter leaf could come loose. After 3.6 million frames across six D3-D4 series bodies, none of my shutters have ever failed; the only related part that caused a problem due to wearout was an aperture-control assembly on a D3. My #2 D4 is currently at 430,000 and I haven't started worrying about it failing yet.
How much does nikon charge for that?
I sent my #1 D4 in recently for a "rebuild" mainly because it was starting to sound quite different from my #2 D4. My request was to "replace all worn mechanical parts to re-life camera." It was at 640,000 frames. The repair was fairly extensive, including
* Replace front body
* Replace shutter mechanism
* Replace square base plate
* Replace rubber grip
* Check AF, exposure, mirror operation
* Clean sensor
* General check and clean
The total bill was $679, which I thought was very reasonable.
I also need to send in my #1 D3s, which is due for its second rebuild at 1,048,650 frames.
