There are many choices that can be made in a photo session, the choices can be limited when we talk about the 'rules' of what makes a photo good or bad. Technical merit is based on a few rules that can be measured, artistic merit doesn't mean that rules don't count though, I just see it as bending them until it fits what you have in mind. Experimenting is the only way to see what fits. Some things just don't work, some things are out of balance and feel uncomfortable to look at.
If you look at these three shots, the 1st one is actually the odd one out. It's shot at 110mm. It's safe, it's clean, it's a girl pushing a marshmallow in her nose. It's fun, but for me it's lacking that punch to make it stand out. It's also shot from straight in front of her. She's in a relaxed pose.
The other 2 shots though, 26 and 30mm. Not the general rule for portraits. At such focal lengths the portrait distorts, making the face rounder and adding depth to the image. Add the fact that I was standing very close and she was looking up in the air at me.. It really punches the shot and almost makes a caricature of her. Which is getting very close to our idea of 'clown'
In that respect the 3rd image is the strongest, the angled mouth the hard crop. The idea of that shot is that's she's looking up into the camera, not me looking at her. That's also the reason the eye is framed so hard too. I very rarely crop photos afterwards.
I try my hardest to frame things how we imagine them. I say we because all these shoots are planned out between Inge and myself. Make-up, lighting, decoration, etc. It's all talked about before the shoot and we try hard to keep to that briefing. There is one factor we cannot calculate into the shoot, and that is the model, Pauline is full of energy so we tried to add that into our work too.
I should add, if you've seen the 1st set of the candy girl pics, the very soft feel we created. Using a wide aperture, reducing the Depth of field to soften and blur the shots, making them much more intimate. I think they were all Fuji shots too, I used just ambient light and high ISO for those, conditions the Fuji just loves.
These though, shot with the Nikon. Aggressive flash, small aperture, lots of focus. Very 'in your face' All components that are chosen to fit the mood and style we have in mind.
I hope that explains a bit about the thinking that goes behind our work. It may be fun but we take it very seriously.
PSG: I pigged far too many of those marshmallows Maybe the expression on the 3rd photo is because the marshmallow in 1&2 went up her nose??
