I just did some geeking myself with these 2 lenses. 
The Nikon AF-S 17-35 F2.8 and the AF-S 17-55 F2.8
Have a look at this mouse-over shot. Camera locked down and both shot at 17mm 2.8 in manual exposure....

Interestingly the 17mm on the 17-35 seems a little wider with less vignetting.
Maybe the illusion of 'wider' is deformation?
I've not been scientific enough to check all that, but I made 6 shots like this because I thought that image-shift was due to camera movement. Every time it's the same.
I'm not comparing IQ here, they're both stunning lenses. I've only bothered buying the 17-35 for it's D3 compatibility. It's just a rough and ready Sunday evening desktop test.
