For those clever folks who figured they would use a slave triggered flash with their S30/40, many have discovered the infamous "preflash" problem whereby the preflash sets off the slave, the camera meters on the "slave flash" and the result is a very underexposed image. (Unless you bought a special slave designed to address this problem).
Anyway, for those S30/40 owners who already have a conventional slave/flash setup, there is an option thanks to a feature from the G2 that was carried over into the S30/40. Thanks to MikeD and Eg for bringing this G2 feature to my attention (in the "double lighting" thread below).
The S30/40 has the AE lock feature that the G2 has and you can fire the preflash to set the exposure separately from the actual shot and thereby have the actual flash trigger your slave unit instead of the pre-flash... I just tried it and IT WORKS !
Procedure:
Set up your slave and flash. Frame the shot in your S30/40, depress the shutter 1/2 way, while holding it down, press the "mic" button and it will fire the pre-flash and lock in exposure...(the preflash will also set off your slave flash, so you'll know its working
Then press the shutter down again for the actual shot - both flashes will go off together just fine.... no preflash to mess up your slave unit..
SOoo, us S30/S40 owners do have some lighting options that we may not have realized when we bought the camera. Thanks to Canon for including this feature. Not the most elegant or fastest way of using external flash, but definitely can be done !!
