Anyone have any tips for converting VHS tapes to DVD?

The Sony VCR doesn't have S-VHS out, just standard Stereo Audio/video Cinch outputs or SCART

External converter box?
Software?

I don't want to go the route of, capture card, editing software, etc, etc. I don't have time for that.

I've thought about getting a stand-alone DVD recorder which might be the easiest anyway, but I'd like to see where Media PC's are going before getting a recorder.

Tips welcome.

A DVD or HD recorder will always be a lot cheaper then a Mediacenter solution (I had a HD recorder and switched to Mediacenter). Both have advantages and disadvantages (Microsoft ).

It's the same as with body's, you can wait forever. Buy now and enjoy now. There will always be new products.

SCART is OK for video tape quality. S-Video was only available on S-VHS recorders if I remember well.

If you go for the external solution, the Canopus ADVC-110 (prev. 100) is legendary for in = out quality with excellent A/V sync.
It can keep up with most very old vids as well, where other cards tend to lose it.

However, it only exports to DV, so you'll still have to put in some time.
It can also defeat Macrovision copy protection

I've only now discovered there's a smaller version if you don't need analog/digital out: ADVC-55 for about €195.

Build in a wine glass or coffee glass. Top with lightly shaken or whipped cream.
Serve with a straw or drink it with a cream moustache.

Best choice... and if it's a pioneer...

inderdaad, ik heb een pioneer met DVD lezer/schrijver - HDD - VHS
je kan makkelijk een VHS band op de harde schijf zetten in de kwaliteit die je wenst, en (vooral) je kan editen voor je DVDs schrijft

ik kopieer ook VHS naar DVD, gewoon met een videorecorder en een DVD-recorder, via scart. Dat werkt heel goed. VHS-kwaliteit is vrij matig, tussen opnames op "goeie" en "gemiddelde" kwaliteit merk je geen verschil.
Let er bij aankoop van je DVD-recorder wel op dat je gemakkelijk kan editen om overbodige stukken weg te knippen. Bij sommige merken is dit denk ik moeilijker dan bij andere.
