To date, more than 40 million Nikon lenses have been sold worldwide. It is in itself an extraordinary accomplishment and is without a doubt the result of the spectacular quality of the lenses combined with Nikon’s singular sense of innovation.
Nikon have been manufacturing lenses since 1933. Nikon’s famous ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass first appeared in 1972, and is now incorporated into many Nikkor lenses. Nikon use the finest optical glass, and manufacture the majority of it in their own glassworks.
Not only does this mean that the lens designers have an enormous selection of different types of glass to choose from – up to 200 types – but they also have the ability to choose exactly the right type of glass for the right lens.
